The Hon. Sandra Schultz Newman joined Cozen O'Connor in January 2007 as chair of the National Appellate Practice. From 1995-2006, she served as the first female justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the oldest court in the country, 67 years older than the U.S. Supreme Court. Prior to her term, Justice Newman was a judge for the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania and a practicing attorney in private practice, and also served as the first female assistant district attorney in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office.

Justice Newman served as the liaison from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to the First Judicial District (Philadelphia Courts). She also was a member of the Judicial Council of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and the chair of the Judicial Council's Committee on Judicial Safety and Preparedness.

A prolific writer and speaker, Justice Newman has delivered addresses to the Philadelphia Bar Associations; various county bar associations; the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania; the Lawyers’ Club of Philadelphia and the ADR Institute. She has also written extensively for various publications and is the author of the Trial Practice Chapter and was a trial practice consultant for the 3-volume book, Alimony, Child Support and Counsel Fees, published by Matthew Bender & Company, Inc. in 1988.

As a nationally recognized legal professional, Justice Newman has been elected to membership in The American Law Institute, is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Drexel University College of Medicine, and serves as a fellow of both the American Bar Foundation and the Pennsylvania Bar Association. She is a past president of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a past chairperson of the Board of Consultors of Villanova University Law School. She is also a member of the American Judicature Society, the Montgomery Bar Association, the National Association of Women Judges and the Montgomery County, Pa., Bench Bar Association.

Justice Newman has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2005 Anne X. Alpern Award from the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Women in the Profession Committee for excellence in the legal profession and for making a significant professional impact on women in the law. She was also honored as the third recipient and first female graduate to receive the Medallion of Achievement Award at Villanova University Law School's 1993 commencement exercises. She was a recipient of the Drexel 100 Award, as one of Drexel University's 100 outstanding living alumni, and has been designated a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania. Listed in The Best Lawyers in America from 1983 until she took her seat on the Bench, she is listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in Publications and recent editions of Marquis Who's Who in American Law.

Justice Newman earned her law degree from Villanova University School of Law, her master of arts from Temple University and her bachelor of science from Drexel University. She has also been awarded honorary doctorates of law from Drexel University, Gannon University and Widener University Law School, and an honorary doctorate of public service from Clarion University.
